Visual Math for Artists

Saty Raghavachary

DreamWorks/Gnomon/USC

This is a ten-lecture course on CG-oriented math which I teach at Gnomon School of Visual Effects in Hollywood, CA. These notes are primarily intended for use by students who attend the course, but I'm making them available for a wider audience by leaving these web pages up (almost) all the time.

Here is the official course description:

The course will be in lecture format (with me showing materials from (this) smartcg.com site and using the whiteboard for additional illustrations and calculations). There will be small (in-class) exercises - calculations and/or plotting things on graph paper which I'll supply. The idea is to learn math by DOING, not just WATCHING me give the lectures. There are no homeworks/quizzes/exams.

If your attitude towards math has been that it is "hard and yucky", I hope to get you to see that it is "useful and fun" or at least that it "might be hard at times but is always useful in the end".
